Facebook responds to Google+, makes events more visual - Facebook has made some long overdue updates to its Events feature, making it easier for people to keep track of their friends' birthdays and to see upcoming events in their calendar.
Facebook’s Bob Baldwin explained that the company’s new Events view was conceived during a Facebook “hackathon” -- an event where Facebook’s engineers stay up late into the night working on new concepts and ideas. The prototype design that was built in the hackathon was then tweaked and given additional features.
“It was awesome to watch this project come together so quickly,” said Bob Baldwin, unveiling the new Facebook Events in a post on the Facebook engineering blog. “Today we announce a new list and calendar view that makes it easier to scan upcoming birthdays, invites and suggested events. Scroll through these events and respond to invites without leaving the page. Suggested events are recommended to you based on your friends, Pages you like, places you've checked in at and the apps you use on Facebook.”
The change comes just a couple of weeks after Google rolled out its much lauded Google+ Events and online event tools.
While Facebook’s new Events feature is a big improvement on the previous iteration, it doesn’t have the same visual appeal and high-tech prowess as Google+ Events -- something which Facebook will more than likely aspire to in future updates. ( AFP )
